Doug Ford Rejects Trump’s Criticism as Ontario Wildfire Crisis Deepens

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has strongly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticism of Canada’s wildfire management as smoke from the province continues to affect air quality across parts of the United States.

Trump accused Canada of failing to manage its forests adequately and suggested that the financial cost of cross-border smoke pollution could be added to existing tariffs on Canadian products.

Ford described the criticism as unacceptable, arguing that Ontario was using every available resource to protect residents and control the fires. He added that Canada would support the United States if the situation were reversed.

Ford said approximately 655,000 hectares—about 1.6 million acres—were burning across Ontario. Many of the most serious fires are concentrated in remote northwestern communities with limited road access.

Thousands of residents have already been evacuated to communities farther south. The Canadian Armed Forces were also preparing aircraft to assist with evacuations from Fort Hope and other areas threatened by rapidly advancing fires.

Ford said there would be no spending limit when it came to protecting communities. Ontario has also announced plans to purchase 11 additional firefighting aircraft to strengthen its long-term emergency response.

Smoke from Canadian fires has travelled into the American Midwest and Northeast, prompting public-health warnings and recommendations that vulnerable residents limit outdoor activity.

Wildfires are a naturally occurring part of Canada’s forest ecosystem, but scientists have warned that hotter conditions, prolonged dry periods and increasingly combustible vegetation can contribute to longer and more destructive fire seasons.

The dispute has added another source of tension to Canada–U.S. relations, particularly because Trump connected the environmental emergency with trade and tariff policy.
