Delhi Police have denied permission for a youth-led movement to march towards India’s Parliament on July 20, setting the stage for a possible confrontation as the monsoon session begins.
The Cockroach Janta Party planned the demonstration to demand accountability over examination-paper leaks that reportedly affected millions of students. Protesters are seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and wider reforms to India’s competitive-examination system.
Police said prohibitory orders were in effect across the New Delhi district. Demonstrations and gatherings of five or more people are restricted outside the designated protest area at Jantar Mantar.
Organizers indicated that they remained determined to proceed with the march despite the restrictions.
The campaign gained momentum after environmentalist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk began a hunger strike on June 28. Authorities transferred the 59-year-old activist to Safdarjung Hospital after his health deteriorated.
A Delhi court ruled that officials were entitled to hospitalize Wangchuk for medical supervision. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, disputed the circumstances of his hospitalization and sought permission to move him to a private facility.
Safdarjung Hospital said Wangchuk’s vital signs were stable, although some blood-test results remained marginally abnormal and required continuous monitoring.
Initially driven by opposition to examination leaks, the movement has evolved into a broader expression of frustration among young Indians over unemployment, institutional accountability and confidence in the education system.
